Starcastle on The Classical Connection On Thursday, March 1, at 2:00 USA Eastern time, Starcastle will be Starcastle Releases New Album "Song of Times" on ProgRock Records Rancho Santa Margarita CA, December 28th 2006 - Starcastle, the classic and highly respected American progressive rock band, will debut its first album of new material since 1978, Song of Times, on ProgRock Records. The band had this to say: "Starcastle is thrilled to join with Shawn Gordon and ProgRock Records in the release of our new work. We see this record as bridging our past and future, and are happy to be aligned with ProgRock, who represent so many fine and vital artists in this continually unfolding genre." "Boy, what an honor and thrill it is to be able to put out this album. I loved these guys when they hit the scene, never in my life did I think I’d get to work with them, especially with such an amazing album, I know you’re going to love it.", said Shawn Gordon, President of ProgRock Records. This new record features Starcastle’s trademark vocal harmonies, twin guitars, fluid and driving bass playing, and grand synthesizer lines. At the same time, the record has a more modern and rocking, less glossy feel than earlier Starcastle releases, more representative of their high energy live shows. The songs and arrangements are tight and melodic, and there’s even one (Babylon) that’s mostly in 4/4 time! December 2006 Holiday Greetings to all! The Starcastle record "Song of Times" will be released March 15th 2007 on Prog Rock Records. The cover artwork is being created by Ed Unitsky, and it is amazing. We do look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments on the record. And, hoping to see everyone at ROSfest in April. Cheers! -Mark Rubel and Starcastle Exciting News- Starcastle Gig! Starcastle will be headlining the fabulous Rites of Spring Festival, Friday April 27th 2007. Please check http://www.rosfest.com/ for details. Confirmed to appear with the band that night are Stephen Tassler (drums), Matt Stewart (guitar), Bruce Botts (guitar) and Al Lewis (vocals). A keyboardist and bassist are still being decided on, along with potential special guests... The band will play material from the new record, "Song of Times", as well as songs from previous records. Please join us for that very rare event, a Starcastle concert! See you there? Many thanks to all involved. October 2006 Thanks to all who have written expressing enthusiasm and anticipation of the new Starcastle record! Mixing has been completed, and we are expecting the mastered recordings back from The Lodge in NYC, where Emily Lazar has been plying her magic. We are developing the artwork now, and look forward to getting the finished package into your hands as soon as possible. Thank You. -Mark Rubel and Starcastle Date: 14 April 2006 UPDATE Greetings, and many thanks for all who have expressed sympathy at Gary's passing. We all miss him greatly, his wonderful presence and musicianship. Thank you also for the enduring interest in the long-awaited new Starcastle CD, to be titled "Song of Times", after a song of Gary's. We regret that it is taking so very long to finish, but the record means a great deal to us, and we are striving to make it as good as possible. There have been many obstacles and mishaps along the way, but we really love the music and how it is coming out, and hope that you will too. Currently we have one more day of mixing to do, and plan to have the recording process completed by the end of April 2006. The writing and realizing of these (all previously unreleased) songs has taken place over an extended period of time by Gary and others, and we have taken it upon ourselves to finish it. All the original members appear at one time or another on the record- Matt Stewart, Steve Tassler and Herb Schildt have been particularly involved. Mark Rubel of Pogo Studio, Matt, Al Lewis (who sings most of the songs) and the lovely/talented Bruce Botts have undertaken the mixing/editing process, with input from the others. Soon, it's on to artwork and mastering. We are in conversation with a couple of record labels, but are still open to and evaluating options. All the very best, and thanks for the love, patience and loyalty that you have extended us. Starcastle
Who would have thought just a year ago that in 2005 Gary Strater would no longer be with us? Well the truth is- he is with us in spirit and always will be. Gary might be gone, but he left an impression on everyone he came in contact with, including myself, and reading Gary’s guestbook over the last few months I know I am not alone feeling that Gary was a unique individual. An amazing bass player, always the ‘rock star’, and most importantly, a friend to all of us. He is missed more than words can express, but as he wanted, Starcastle will move on.... The new CD with Gary on each track is finished. We will be ‘shopping’ the CD to various labels in the coming months. I will keep everyone posted as to our ‘progress’. And for more- Starcastle are featured in the Champaign-Urbana News- Gazette on Jan. 6th with a interview and photo. We will be posting this on the web site soon. A tribute to Gary at ‘Bass Inside’ magazine is available at: http://www.bassinside.com/2004/december/strater.htm Gary always told me he wanted Starcastle to be a family of musicians past and present that could play together and create music. A progressive music with a positive message. In the 21st century with war, death and negativity surrounding all of us, Gary’s idea is more relevant than ever. ‘Hear the Light’. Eric Abrahamsen
Hello everyone, It’s taken a little longer than I anticipated for me to give you all some answers about my health. Here we go. Just before we played the Starcastle reunion/benefit concert in Champaign (thanks to all who attended that benefit concert for their non-stop show of love and respect for me, my family, and each other), I had a procedure (Chemo-embolization) done to my liver. There was a massive amount of Chemo and a few other little tricks aimed at getting rid of the tumors that had grown very rapidly in my liver. A few days after the procedure occurred they discovered that my gallbladder had been destroyed in the process. This caused the need for an emergency surgery to be performed to remove the remains of my gallbladder. I became quite ill during all of this and the doctors thought I would not survive that night. In any case, I DID survive ;-p and was released a day and a half before the concert. Hence the glazed over look that I mastered in the photos from that show. I am now much better. My liver is back and much happier than it was before and I have been getting some strength and weight back; a little more each day. So I am better and I want to thank all of you that have been on my side through this period. I believe that your prayers and love has carried me to this success. So many of you have written and prayed and donated and done whatever you could do that I am humbled. For example, there is a guitar traveling around the festival circuit this summer that gets raffled off only to have the winner donate the guitar back to the next festival. It started at the Right of Spring Festival, moved on to NEARFest, and is now on it's way to Atlanta I believe. This story among the many others has renewed my faith in love, in humanity, and in the goodness that still exists in progressive music fans. I love you all for this gift and I pray that you can all some day feel the Light of Love as strongly as you have made me feel it. Bless you all and as always, PEACE. Gary Strater
Rosfest Auction update:
Joel Craig who attended Rosfest last weekend and won the autographed guitar auctioned at the festival for Gary Strater has posted several photos taken at the festival and the guitar.
http://home.comcast.net/~joelcraig23
Joel was kind enough to pass the guitar on to the NEARFest organizers for another auction on Gary’s behalf. Thank you Joel and Rosfest organizer George Roldan!
I spoke to Gary yesterday and he’s sounding stronger! Eric Abrahamsen
Hello everyone,
This past weekend was filled with emotion for everyone involved with Starcastle and the Gary Strater Benefit. We wish to thank Dru, Lisa, and Debbie for all their hard work in making the Benefit the success it was. Thanks to everyone who attended the show, and those who have e mailed their support to Gary and his family. Gary played the entire Starcastle set which was amazing!
We will be posting photos of the show in the next couple days. If you were at Sunday night’s concert and took photos or even video, please feel free to send us a copies. We would love to see them!
Eric Abrahamsen
Over the course of the last few days, there has been some question if Starcastle will perform this coming Sunday. I have had several communications with drummer Steve Tassler concerning the possibility of Starcastle playing a short set with or without Gary. This was his response as of this morning....
'Let me tell you how Herb, Terry, Steve, Matt and I feel about Sunday. We all are going to perform. We are going to rehearse with another bass player starting Friday night. Matt is working with him as of now. We are going to play, probably, 4 or so songs. We assume Gary won't be there. If he is, fantastic.
As you can see, this is Starcastle getting together to do something for our friend. That is all it is. We all feel that it would be a good idea to present this, factually, on the web site. We feel that telling people what we are going to do, in as honest and straightforward a manner as possible, is the right thing to do. I might even go so far as to tell people exactly what we are doing. (i.e..six guys are rehearsing, over the course of 2 days, to play 4 songs of classic Starcastle material for the benefit of their good friend) You might then mention that this is a good opportunity for people to not only support the benefit, but also a good opportunity to experience the first coming together of this group of musicians in 25 years. We can tell them that in no way is this a full blown SC concert, but rather SC in their own context, in their own Home Town, working with their friends, pulling together a set, to play their hearts out for their friend. I guarantee you, we will do that.' - Steve.
I spoke briefly to both Gary and his wife Sascha today. Gary is still in the hospital, but doing better and could be released by this weekend. According to Sascha having Starcastle come together in this way has kept him going!
We Hope to see everyone at the Fat City Saloon on Sunday. Be there!

Gary Strater Update:
This has been a stressful week within the Starcastle family as Gary’s condition has been deteriorating and yesterday he went into surgery to have his gall bladder removed. Needless to say, with this new development the original Starcastle will not be able to perform as planned, but will be on hand during the benefit to meet and greet and perform as special guests throughout the day on April 25th.
I know many of you have e mailed us and made plans to attend this gig from around the country. Despite this change in plans, Starcastle fans should still consider coming to the Fat City Saloon in Champaign in support of Gary and his family. This is still very much a Starcastle event and a memorabilia auction will take place, not to mention great music from some of the region’s best artists.
On a personal note, Gary Strater is a friend and partner in the music business. There are very few people I have met in this ‘industry’ with the honesty and integrity that Gary has shown me and others. Like any relationship we have had ups and downs when it comes to marketing the Starcastle name and trying to make things happen with the band, but we have stuck with it and am looking forward to Gary’s full recovery and move ahead. Get well ‘G’.

Happy Holidays to you all. Over the past few years I’ve been doing more than a little work on keeping the Starcastle name alive. I’ve found that several fans were doing their part as well and that has kept me fueled for my efforts. You all know that there have been setbacks and obstacles along the way and you’ve all inspired me to keep working through them. As you may have guessed by now, we’ve hit a new problem. All of this last year I had been fighting what I thought was a food allergy that was causing my health to gradually deteriorate. Early in October, however a series of tests lead to the discovery of the real problem. The tests found a Carcinoid tumor in my pancreas that had metastasized to my liver. This type of Cancer is serious, but not necessarily life threatening. There are health and financial issues that have dominated my days since then. I have a lot of therapy and tests to go through for some time yet. There is some good news though. Al Lewis has returned from Thailand and Terry Luttrel has offered to help out with a possible benefit gig that all of the original and new Starcastle members want to put together to help out with my medical expenses. The date, location and other guest artists will be worked out soon. Check this page for more information In any case, we are plodding forward and doing what we can. With your prayers, we will overcome this new glitch.
PEACE,
GARY STRATER
Hello all. I have, until now, steered clear of making any statements on my own website; but over the past two years the Starcastle world has gone through many changes which I am ready to make brief comments about. We have been working, as you all know, on a new CD. This project has taken far longer than any sane person would have predicted. It has taken so long, in fact, that I have almost had a few mental meltdowns myself. I have at times decided to release the recording, as it is just to get it over with only to be calmed down by the other SC guys who are obviously far saner than I am. I have at times decided to give up and never go into the studio again only to wake up in the middle of the night with the answer to whatever issue was frustrating me at the time. All in all the new CD has been an exasperating, exhilarating and terrifyingly rewarding process that has gone all the way from re-recording songs written from 1979-1985 to deciding which of the brand spanking new songs may have to wait for our next CD. I’ve mended lots of tears in valuable relationships and believe that I can say that the initial purpose for all of this has been fulfilled. That purpose was to put the personal business of the six original friends back on the course that it should have always been on. We won’t tour as a rock group again as the six of us for many reasons but none of those reasons are anger or distrust. This process has eliminated those feelings. During this process, however, a new purpose began to make itself visible. The reunion started to cause new music to appear to us again. Not just the current members, but the original members as well. Now we are working on more material than can fit and are working on “which guy should play what part,” issues as a larger band. Five of the six original members are still offering to be in the studio if needed to play or sing or write. It really is a phenomenal situation. The only problem is the process itself. With members living from San Francisco to L.A. to Scranton, PA and several points in between, and Pogo Studio (our home base} being very busy, recording has been and remains difficult to schedule. The loss of Terry Luttrell was a sluggish two years long process and a great disappointment to us all, but the discovery of AL Lewis (thanks to Dr. LeDuca of Nearfest fame) was miraculous for us. His lyrics and performances have brought life and light to the whole band both in and out of the studio. Al is now in Thailand, playing drums on tour until Nov. We may still get this CD out this year. If we don’t it will be because we decided to put Herb’s “River’s Edge” on this CD. It is a large piece and may be worth it’s own CD, but we were planning to have it on this release. I know that all of you are tired of hearing about delays and that is one of the reasons that I have considered doing this in a more hasty fashion; but I think that I am now ready to resolve myself to the other members’ feeling that putting out the CD that WE WANT is much better than just putting out a CD. The same will be true of our live performances. We will guarantee a great prog show or we won’t start the tour. Please believe me when I say that I have agonized over these two main subjects more than you may ever know. It is my hope that all of you supporters of Starcastle will stick it out with us.
Peace, Gary Strater
Sunsinger Records and Starcastlemusic.com are pleased to announce the new line-up of Starcastle for the upcoming 'Returning Delirium' CD and tour .
Many of you will recognize Al Lewis from the group Alaska who released one self-titled CD in the late 90’s, and performed at both Prog Day and Nearfest. More information on Al Lewis is available at: http://home.earthlink.net/~alaska98/ We are excited to have Al on board, as well as the return of 1980’s Starcastle guitarist Bruce Botts, and drummer Jeff Koehnke. The new CD will also feature Starcastle members Steve Hagler and Steve Tassler, as well as contributions from past members of the groups 30+ year history. 2003 will be a great year for Starcastle!
Eric Abrahamsen
Hello, As management for Starcastle, on their behalf, we regret to inform you that they must cancel their planned fall touring. We hope that you are understanding and know how much they were looking forward to performing at Progday. For Starcastle, it's now time to go back to the drawing boards to set a new lineup and map out a plan that will allow them to return to performing successfully. Regretfully, Umbrella Artists Management Inc.
Stan Hertzman President
The following is a statement from the band regarding this circumstance. ..."Terry Luttrell has moved on to other things in his life. He has a family and religious beliefs are what guide his choices. He was is and always will be a brother to all of us in Starcastle. We all wish him well in his life. His replacement, after a few weeks, decided that the musical directions of Starcastle were too far removed from the direction that he felt he should be moving. None of the remaining five members of the new line-up feel that we can perform our material without the right voice in this crucial position. These events have, therefore, forced us to withdraw from our planned fall tour and postpone it until the band has filled the once again vacant lead vocalist position. We must painfully cancel our Progday performance and hope that our fans can remain patient for just a little while longer."
Just a quick update...

We are pleased to announce Starcastle's appearance at Progday 2002!!! From Progday: American progressive rock masters STARCASTLE will be appearing at the ProgDay festival this Labor Day weekend, August 31st and September 1st, 2002. This performance is a culmination of a series of serendipitous events for all involved, as ProgDay found out that Starcastle might be available only after initial band commitments were made, but fate smiled kindly and the band was both available to play, and eager to get on stage in front of their fans after all these years. Originating in Champaign Illinois, Starcastle was one of the popular and well-respected of the American prog bands of the 70s. Their first two albums for Epic, "Starcastle" and "Fountains of Light", are archetypes of the symphonic sound; utopian, grand, sweeping, intricate, complex and melodic, a marriage of accessibility and compositional rigor that holds up well to much of the contemporary music and what has come since. After many years of inactivity, Starcastle is back. Gary Strater's Sunsinger Records has released the Starcastle archive "Chronos I", featuring material from the band's early days, and work is also underway for a new studio album. The long-awaited reunion of the band will be realized on the stage for the first time this Labor Day weekend. It is a privilege for ProgDay that this world-class band has accepted an invitation to perform. For more info: http://www.starcastlemusic.com Tickets are already on sale for ProgDay, a two-day festival taking place on the Labor Day weekend, August 31-September 1 2002, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, NC. Already confirmed for the event are Happy the Man, The Muffins, Avant Garden (all US), Kraan (Germany), Tempano (Venezuela) and Thieves' Kitchen (UK). Taking place every year since 1995, ProgDay is the longest-running North American prog festival, and is a by-fans, for-fans event, organized by a dedicated team of volunteers. Its idyllic outdoor environment and community atmosphere makes it an unforgettable weekend of music and spirit. -- ProgDay An International Festival of Progressive Rock www.progday.com

"Shine on Brightly"? No..... We have purchased a copy of the NMC/Burning Airlines Starcastle live CD this week. We would like to make everyone aware that this CD is the same recording as "Concert Classics", and an earlier Japanese release titled "Fountains" on the Welcome label. The recording is inferior and the presentation is filled with inaccuracies. The mix is poor, as well as serious tape flutter on "Fountains" among other problems. The CD cover itself was pulled off the Starcastle web site, as were the other booklet photos. This was done without our permission, as was the printing of the Starcastle web site address inside the liner notes. Even more disturbing is the fact that the release claims to be live recordings from August 12, 1979 in Boston. This is a blatant attempt to deceive fans into believing they are purchasing a different recording than "Concert Classics". There was no gig in Boston that Month, and both Terry and Herb had left Starcastle in Autumn of 1978. We do not recognize this recording as worth buying nor do we endorse NMC and "Shine on Brightly". As stated earlier, we had not been contacted by the label prior to it's release. NMC and it's licensor Renaissance Records had ample opportunity to do so. Eric

Hello everyone! On October 15th Gary Strater and Bruce Botts will begin work on "Progressive Bass 2". No release date has been set, but we be posting more information on this as it becomes available. Work on the 5th Starcastle studio album continues. We are three quarters of the way there, and hope to have it finished and in everyones CD player shortly! Another thanks to everyone who have provided Starcastle memories, live information or just to let us know you are out there! We will be updating the Web site again with Part 2 of the Biography, more rare photos, ticket stubs, concert posters, and over 150 tour dates. Until then.... All the best, Eric
Hello everyone! A lot happening in the Starcastle camp so let's get started! In late July Starcastle appeared in the Champaign, IL News-Gazzette, with a story on the reunion of the band and a photo of Starcastle in the studio. Starcastle will also be appearing in this month's "Progression" magazine. Both Gary and Terry have been interviewed for the article. Progression is available at most quality bookstores and from the magazine's web site. Reviews of "Chronos 1" are now coming in, and everyone's been positive so far. It's great to see the band's early work finally out and in the stores. If you have not picked up a copy yet, you can purchase one (maybe two!) here on the web site. We still have a limited supply of the Chronos T-shirts available as well. Hopefully most of you caught VH1's "Behind the Music" special on REO Speedwagon. It was very nice to see Terry get recognition for his early work with the band. Finally a "New CD" update! Work continues on the disc. Gary & Herb just did some arrangements and Hagler has been working on some of the vocals and lyrics. Thank you for being patient, we know you will be pleased with the results. That's it for now, keep checking back- A big update is due in the next couple weeks.... Eric
Two updates in one week! Gary Strater and Bruce Botts will be attending "Nearfest", the Progressive Rock Festival in Bethlehem, PA where Starcastle will have a vendor table. The dates of the Fest are June 23-24. It is sold out, but if you are lucky enough to have a ticket, stop by, pick-up a copy of "Chronos 1" and say Hello!
"Chronos 1" will be available on June 26th!
An update on "Chronos 1". Look for this CD to be available in May. Artwork delays have pushed this back a few weeks, but we are back on track! In the meantime- here's the final/revised song list: Lady Of The Lake Forces Dance Of The Physotrons To The Firewind Fountains True To The Light Morningfall A Fall Of Diamonds Where Caverns Wind Portraits Breath And Thunder The CD will include all of the Demo that got the band it's contract with CBS/Epic including the first song the band wrote as a group- the previously unreleased studio version of "Breath & Thunder". "Dance Of The Physotrons" and "Where Caverns Wind" have never been released in any form, and as discussed in the earlier update, the remaining pieces are alternate versions of songs from the 1st two records for Epic. Look for a long overdue(!)update on the Biography page, as well as more tour dates, including more shows with Boston, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Peter Frampton, Be Bop Deluxe and others as well as some of the 1980's concerts. Many thanks to all of you who have helped put this together! Starcastle wish to thank everyone for their continued support, and encouragment! Until next time....
Starcastle Archive CD "Chronos - Volume 1" is the title of the new Starcastle archive CD to be released in April. We are pushing the CD’s release out one month as we want to do the best job possible for the fans. Again, thanks for your patience! Here’s the song list for Volume 1:
The first three tracks are from the bands early years, and includes the previously unheard "Dance Of The Physotrons". The version of "Lady Of The Lake" presented here is from the original demo done at "Golden Voice Studios" in Pekin, IL. The following six songs present the original demo for the "Fountains of Light" LP as the band intended the album to sound. You will find this version very different to the final recording. The booklet will feature background on the songs and commentary from the band. The CD will be available on Sunsinger Records from the Starcastle web site and good Progressive distributors and retailers.
Hello Everyone! We are pleased to announce the formation of Sunsinger Records. Our 1st release will be an Archive CD of early Starcastle Demos and unreleased material recently discovered by the band. This has a tentative release for late February, mid- March and will be available here on the web site. We are currently working on the artwork, and we hope everyone will be pleased with the results! We are also excited about the 2nd Sunsinger release from singer/songwriter- Edwin Ray. This Melodic rock release will follow the Starcastle Archive disc. We will have more news on Edwin and the CD in the coming weeks. Until then! All the best, Starcastle and Sunsinger Records |
